Liquefaction, killer whales and the end of the world

April 4th, 2007

Today I found out about liquefaction. This often occurs during earthquakes where the ground basically turns into liquid. So you could in effect, plumit into this soily liquid crap. Then when the earthquake stops, the ground turns solid again and you will be crushed.

Liquefaction death

This really isn’t a good way to go, in fact, I can’t think of anything worse.

I pondered on the possibilities of swimming out of the soily crap. But Dan reckoned that it wouldn’t be possible, especially with the earthquake throwing you around.

The next logical question is whether Killer Whales could swim out of it. They are after all, damn good swimmers. I reckon they could. But the problem then is that they would still be in the soily crap when it solidifies and then dieing. Unless, at a presice moment they jump out of the soil to safety. Unfortunately they would then probably die from not being able to breath out of water.

Killer whale

Note: Dan reckons that the impact of the whale onto the solidified ground would make the whale explode. Either way, the whale theory is not going to work.

Killer whale exploding

Other options are crocodiles, otters, hippos and birds.

This has perhaps been overlooked by scientists and it has been left up to me to warn people of a possible end of world scenario. Here it is, the whole world has an earthquake, resulting in MASS liquefaction. All humans perish, crocodiles and the like survive, thus bringing in the next era of Earth ruled by birds, crocs and otters.

  1. Whales are mammals and breath out of the water anyway, they dont have gills.

  2. Also, you wouldn’t get a whole earth earthquake.
Added to that that animals, mammals and fish detect these extraordinary weather changes way before they happen (something in their brain tells them. I don’t know what, but if I did I would be very rich, because then humans would have the same instinct.)
So anyway, personally I think that your theory of the whole earth having an earthquake will never happen. Or at least not in mine or your life time.
    Wow, deep and meaningful subject.
    NOTE TO RICH
Ask Dan how he used to want to die (If you could have a choice about this)

  3. Thanks for the insights.

Worrall – if whales can breath out of water then why do they die when they are beached?

Jayne – what you’re saying kinda backs my theory up. All the animals would rush to a safe spot where humans would just be sat there and therefore die.

I’ll ask Dan about the dieing thing it sounds funny!

  4. why do you think they have blow holes on the top of heads/bodies?

A beached whale cant eat for a start thats one reason they die and i think they need to be in the water, but still breath out of it. They would probably become very distressed by being out of the water and deteriorate accordingly.

Whales are definitely mammals and therefore have lungs like you and me only fish have gills which allow them to extract oxygen from the water.

  5. Okay okay! But basically, the whale would die out of the water, which still re-affirms my theory!

I wasn’t backing up your theory. You did a drawing of a whale smashed up etc. I’m saying that the whales and other mammals and animals and fish will get out of the way and won’t be smashed up on a beach or wherever. They have a sixth sense.

Also when whales beach they usually die because they are too hot. They need water pouring on them to keep them cool. Obviously if they “lived that long”, then would starve also, but I would imagine sea birds and other animals would and do have a bit out of them.

  7. Pete reckons its a pressure issue, being out of the water their organs eventually collapse.

    Worrall - Friday April 6th, 2007 at 10:30
  8. THE WHALE WILL DIE OKAY, IT WILL DIE! unless like jayne says, they will move out of the way due to their sixth sense. However, I should mentioned i am focusing on Sea World killer whales, in which case, they wouldn’t be able to avoid liquefaction.

  9. question, when this liquefaction happens, what happens to the water above the ground? i imagine with water being less dense it would sit on top so the whale would be fine.

    Worrall - Friday April 6th, 2007 at 17:04
  10. hmmm, i doubt the whale would be okay but I don’t know enough to back up this claim.

I looked here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil_liquefaction but no luck.

    Richard Stelmach - Saturday April 7th, 2007 at 18:05
  11. Looked on wikipedia, theres no mention of it happening under the water, like in the sea/ocean so i reckon most whales would be fine, lets be honest the sea is pretty deep, at least 20,000 leagues so ive been told.

  12. Possibly be best to live in a Waterworld type scenario?

    Waterworld

  13. Has the whole whale thing now been done to death (no pun intended; on second thoughts, YES IT WAS, ha ha)

Lets face it whales are not as stupid as us humans.

    Jayne - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 13:25
  14. technically, i say whales are not as clever as us. And yes the debate of whales is over, they would live….unless they were in Sea World.

    Richard Stelmach - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 13:29
  15. Erm… Actually, doesn’t it depend upon where or which Sea World they live??
Sea World in Florida is about an hours drive from the coast (either way), however, San Diego Sea World in California is just a kick off the Pacific Ocean,
Sea World San Antonio at Texas is waay off the coast.
Could the sea actually cover all of the earth following a huge earthquake; either way I still believe that whales will not be liquefied and then ruled by what was it “birds, crocs and otters.” Otters!!! where did that come from. Where you live are there these big croc eating otters, and you have to be in your house before dark or the OTTERS will get you!!! I feel another story coming up from Rich with regard to Otters. (maybe a phobia going back to his child-hood)

    Jayne - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 15:22
  16. NO MORE WHALE COMMENTS, I SAID AT THE START, I’M NO SCIENTIST, JUST A THEORIST! WHEN THE SCIENTISTS GET HOLD OF THIS IT WILL MAKE THEM RICH WHILE THEY REFINE MY GREAT IDEAS!!!!

Otters – amphibious, clever, quick, resourceful, can make dams. All of which lead to the logical answer that otters will survive mass liquefaction.

    Richard Stelmach - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 16:21
  17. Do otters make dams?? I thought that was beavers??

    Jayne - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 16:30
  18. …………….it’s just beavers. Though i could see them learning how to make dams when liquefaction occured.

    Richard Stelmach - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 16:53
  19. Are otters fast learners? Or would they get plenty of notice from watching CNN?

    Worrall - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 17:36
  20. i reckon otters would be fast learners cos they look like beavers so they would pick it up easy enough when put under enough pressure (as the liquefaction would provide)

    Richard Stelmach - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 17:38
  21. You’re really fascinated by this liquefaction; can one ascertain why??
How did you learn about it?

PS. Good score so far; Man U : 7 Roma 2 whooo whoooooo.
Oh, yes I am a united supporter.

    Jayne - Tuesday April 10th, 2007 at 21:12
  22. She’s such a great supporter that she got the score wrong!

    Dan Atkinson - Wednesday April 11th, 2007 at 08:38
  23. NO Dan I did not get the score wrong!!!!!!!
I was AT THAT TIME referring to aggregate score not score so far in the second leg!!!!!!!

    Jayne - Wednesday April 11th, 2007 at 20:30
  24. Great performance, great result. Bring on AC!
